ART PRISON hotel

Santa Caterina fortress

Favignana, ITALY 2018

with Laís Domingos+Natália Bedim

On one hand it looks like an architecture of folded and sharp sheets of paper, cut like a crystal with a razor blade. On the other hand it's like a poetry of stone matericity that slowly fades away under the action of time...Taking advantage of the natural slope between the fortress and the existing two-storey structure, the projects articulates the new culture centre by placing the auditorium, the multi-purpose hall and the restaurant around an open court-gallery overlooking the landscape. The sharp volumes proposed complete the fortress original layout, developing the Santa Caterina castle angles and geometries with a contemporary design of tilted surfaces in tufa local stone and corten steel, slightly detached and respectful of the older structure. The cabin modules, scattered like arrows to the surrounding nature, extend their geometrical trajectories toward the Aegadian islands and the main mountain features of the Sicilian coast. The Art Prison hotel projects itself as an open-air museum for land art exhibitions and live performances, ideal stage for light festivals and video mapping installations, light beacon of contemporary art to reach out to the surrounding landscape.
